Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
