A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
